What climatologies are used in this display?
PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) normals are used in this display. PRISM data are inherently available as monthly values. For precipitation the monthly values are averaged over the course of the month (Monhtly Total/Number of days in the month). The resultant values are then used to make 7-day total precipitation normals. For temperatures, the monthly average temperature is assigned to the 15th of the month, with the intervening values taken as an interpolation between those two values (e.g. - the value for 30 Jan is the average of the values for 27 Jan - 2 Feb. Which are calculated as a linear trend between the montly average maximum (minimum) for January and the monthly average maximum (minimum) for Februrary.
What does the highlighting around the Normal Precipitation or Normal Max/Min Temperature imply?
The color used to highlight the normal values (precipitation or max/min temperature) are used to deliniate the category of the forecast at the point clicked. If the selected point is within an area of enhanced odd for above-normal temperatures, the shading around the normal max/min temperature will appear red. If the selected point is within an area of enhanced odd for below-normal temperatures, the shading around the normal max/min temperature will appear blue. The same idea applies to the precipiation normal value, except enhanced odds for above- (below-) normal precipitation values are green (brown).
