Weekly Global Climate Highlights Map for July 5, 2003




1. Alaska:

WARM ANOMALY CONTINUES

Temperatures were 2°C to 4°C above normal across Alaska; with highs ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Lows remained above freezing throughout the week [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].

 

2. Eastern North America:

WARM ANOMALY DEVELOPS

Temperatures were again 2°C to 3°C above normal for the week from northern Illinois northeastward to the Maritime Provinces, with highs ranging from 30°C to 36°C. [WARM - 2 weeks].

 

3. Southeastern United States:

TROPICAL STORM BILL BRINGS MORE RAIN TO THE REGION

Tropical Storm Bill struck the central Gulf coast with high wind and torrential rains of 125 to 400 mm. The remnants of Bill then spread amounts of 25 to 125 mm to the middle Atlantic coast. During the past 13 weeks, precipitation has totaled 300 to 900 mm over most of the region, yielding moisture surpluses of 80 to 500 mm [WET - Up to 16 weeks].

 

4. South America:

UNUSUALLY WARM WEATHER PERSISTS

Weekly departures of +2°C to +7°C again covered southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and central Chile. Highs were generally in the thirties (°C) across Brazil, Paraguay, and extreme northern Argentina, but readings remained in the twenties (°C) elsewhere. The mercury stayed above freezing except in the extreme southern portions of the region [WARM - Up to 6 weeks].

 

5. Europe, Northwestern Africa, and the Middle East:

WARM ANOMALY REMAINS

Temperatures averaging 2°C to 8°C above normal dominated central and southern Europe and northwestern Africa while weekly departures of +2°C to +4°C extended across the Middle East and into Saudi Arabia. Highs soared into the upper thirties (°C) at a number of locations across southern Europe and reached as high as 46°C in the Middle East [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].

 

6. Europe:

RAINS EASE DRYNESS IN PARTS OF REGION

Showers brought 25 to 50 mm of rain (with up to 150 mm in the Alps) to central and southeastern Europe during the past week. However, less than 150 mm of rain fell during the last 8 weeks over parts of the region producing deficits of 50 to 150 mm [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].

 

7. Western Siberia:

TEMPERATURES REMAIN ABOVE NORMAL

Weekly departures of +2°C to +5°C prevailed across western Siberia as highs climbed into thirties (°C) in portions of the region [WARM - 2 weeks].

 

8. East Central Asia:

HEAVY RAINS DRENCH REGION

Torrential rains (100 to 400 mm) inundated east central China while heavy rains (50 to 200 mm) soaked South Korea and southern Japan. Between 300 and 700 mm of precipitation has accumulated since June 6 in much of the region, yielding moisture excesses of 150 to 250 mm [WET - Up to 4 weeks].
