1. Western United States and Southwestern Canada:
PACIFIC STORMS CONTINUE TO BRING ABUNDANT RAINS
Between 25 and 100 mm of rain fell on the West Coast from central California northward to British Columbia. During the last 8 weeks, precipitation totaled 250 to 500 mm, yielding short-term moisture surpluses of 50 to 250 mm [WET - Up to 9 weeks].
2. California:
UNUSUALLY COOL WEATHER DEVELOPS
Weekly temperature departures of -2°C to -4°C dominated most of California, with locally larger departures of -5°C. Subfreezing lows occurred at higher elevations, but readings remained above freezing elsewhere. The mercury failed to reach 30°C at most locations except for the southeastern deserts [COLD - 2 weeks].
3. Texas:
STILL VERY DRY
Little or no rain fell on southern and central Texas during the past week. Eight-week totals of less than 100 mm allowed short-term moisture shortages of 50 to 115 mm to dominate much of the state [DRY - Up to 7 weeks].
4. Southeastern United States:
ABNORMALLY WET WEATHER PREVAILS
Moderate to heavy rains (50 to locally 200 mm) drenched the deep South while totals of 10 to 50 mm covered the remainder of the region. During the last 4 weeks, accumulations of 100 and 300 mm of rain were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 6 weeks].
5. Uruguay and Northeastern Argentina:
HEAVY RAINS CONTINUE
Torrential rains (100 to 200 mm) drenched western Uruguay and adjacent parts of Argentina during the past week while 50 to 100 mm fell on the remainder of the region. Precipitation totals of 100 to 500 mm during the last 4 weeks were among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution [WET - Up to 7 weeks].
6. Western Europe and North Atlantic:
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES PERSIST
Weekly departures of +2°C to +5°C dominated the region, with locally higher departures approaching +6°C. Highs exceeded 20°C on the Continent while subfreezing lows were limited to Greenland, Iceland, and some interior portions of Europe [WARM - Up to 4 weeks].
7. Western and Southern Europe:
STILL UNUSUALLY DRY
Fewer than 25 mm of rain fell on most of the Continent, but weekly totals of 25 to 50 mm were reported in southern Ireland, the Benelux Countries, parts of Italy, and the Adriatic Coast of the Balkans. Generally less than 200 mm of precipitation accumulated during the past 13 weeks, resulting in highly variable precipitation shortfalls of 50 to 440 mm [DRY - Up to 13 weeks].
8. Southeastern Europe:
STILL UNUSUALLY COOL
Temperatures averaged 2°C to 4°C below normal last week, with isolated weekly departures approaching -5°C. The mercury failed to reach 30°C throughout the region, but lows were generally above freezing, except at higher elevations [COLD - Up to 4 weeks].
9. Southeastern Africa:
DRY SEASON BEGINS EARLY
Little or no rain fell on much of the region, except for light amounts (10 to 25 mm) in central Tanzania and west-central South Africa. Four-week rainfall totals (less than 50 mm) were among the lowest 10% of the climatological distribution, suggesting an early start to their dry season [DRY - Up to 5 weeks].
10. Northeastern South Africa:
WARM ANOMALY REPORTED
During the past 2 weeks, temperatures were around 2°C above normal, with readings among the highest 10% of the climatological distribution. Highs were generally in the upper twenties and low thirties (°C), and the mercury remained above the freezing mark [WARM - Up to 7 weeks].
11. Kazakhstan and Adjacent Countries:
COLD AIR REMAINS ENTRENCHED
Weekly departures of -2°C to -5°C dominated Kazakhstan and neighboring countries of the former Soviet Union. Lows were generally below freezing, but above -10°C, while highs were generally in the twenties (°C) [COLD - Up to 7 weeks].
12. Southeastern Siberia and Northeastern China:
WARM ANOMALY COVERS REGION
Temperatures were generally 2°C to 5°C above normal, with locally higher departures of around +6°C. Highs were generally in the twenties (°C) while lows remained above -10°C [WARM - Up to 6 weeks].
13. Southeastern China:
WARM WEATHER PERSISTS
Temperatures averaging 2°C to 5°C above normal dominated southeastern China, with highs exceeding 30°C. The mercury remained above 20°C along the southern coast of China [WARM - Up to 5 weeks].
